Can I Use My Existing WhatsApp Number in CRM?

You can't directly use your existing personal or business WhatsApp number to register in CRM unless that number is first migrated or connected through the WhatsApp Business API via Meta.

Needs validation from Meta documentation: This article's core premise — that a number can only be connected to the app or the API, never both — reflects the rules that were true before Meta's WhatsApp Coexistence rollout. Coexistence, an official Meta capability rolled out in 2025, now lets a single number run the WhatsApp Business App and the WhatsApp Business API (via CRM) at the same time, with chats synced between them. If Coexistence is available for your account, you may not need Option 1 or Option 2 below at all. Check with your onboarding flow or see the Related Articles link on Coexistence before migrating or buying a new number.

When You Can Use Your Existing Number

You can use your existing WhatsApp number if all of the following are true:

  • The number is not currently linked to WhatsApp Messenger or the WhatsApp Business app, or you are willing to delete your WhatsApp account from the app to free up the number for API use.
  • You complete the CRM WhatsApp API onboarding process.
  • Meta successfully verifies and approves the number under your Business Manager (WABA).

Once connected, your WhatsApp messages will be sent and received directly inside CRM.

When You Can't Use Your Existing Number

You cannot use your number in CRM if:

  • The number is still active on the standard WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app, and
  • You want to use the same number both on your phone and in CRM at the same time through a standard (non-Coexistence) connection — Meta does not allow this outside of Coexistence.
Outside of Coexistence, a number can only be connected to one platform at a time: either the app or the API, not both.

Recommended Options / Workarounds

1

Migrate Your Existing Number

  • Delete your WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business account from the phone app.
  • During the CRM WhatsApp API setup, verify the same number.
  • Once approved, all WhatsApp messages will now be managed within CRM.

Important: Once the number is connected to the WhatsApp API through this standard (non-Coexistence) path, you will no longer be able to use it in the mobile app.

2

Use a New Number

  • Get a new phone number for your WhatsApp API (to use with CRM).
  • Keep your existing WhatsApp number active on your phone for personal or direct use.

This is often the easiest and safest option if you don't want to lose access to your current WhatsApp app chats and don't want to go through Coexistence onboarding.
